A vacuum pump is equipment which is used in industries and in laboratories to create vacuum in a closed container. It is used to reduce the liquid pressure and to suck away surplus air and other elements from the closed container. The removal of extra liquid and air reduces the boiling point of the base. TYPES OF VACUUM PUMPS

Positive Displacement pump
A positive displacement pump has an expanding capacity on the side of suction which in turn decreases the cavity on the side of discharge. The liquid from the discharge side flows into the pump as the suction side expands and the cavity collapses on the discharge side. The volume of the liquid is constant in each operation in these types of pumps.
Momentum transfer pump
In momentum transfer pump, the exhaust side is maintained at a reduced pressure by a positive displacement pump. The gas molecules are accelerated to the exhaust side from the vacuum side. These pumps only work for the pressure below 0.1 kPa.
Regenerative pumps
The regenerative pump is the hybrid of centrifugal pump and turbo pump in concept. It utilises the vortex behaviour of air or liquid. It is designed as a multistage centrifugal pump. It has many sets of perpendicular teeth on the rotor circulating air molecules inside hollow grooves that are stationery. These types of pump can reach up to 0.0001 Pa.
Entrapment Pump
An entrapment pump works by converting air to a solid state. It can be a cryopump which condenses the gases to solid or absorbed state by dropping the temperature. It can also be a chemical pump which uses chemicals to react with gases to produce solids or an ion pump which uses strong ion field to ionise the gases into solid.
